(AP) ? Call Steven Holcomb Mr. Icebreaker.

Three years ago, Holcomb, the top driver on the U.S. bobsled team, broke a 50-year gold-medal drought for America in four-man competition at the Bobsled World Championships. Two years ago, he won the first four-man Olympic gold for his country since 1948, and on Sunday he went where no U.S. bobsledder had gone before ? to the top of the podium in two-man at worlds.

And he did it in a sled he had never raced.

"That's going to take a little while to sink in," said Holcomb, of Park City, Utah. "My world championship medal it had been 50 years. My (Olympic) gold medal was 62 years. And now this ? never, ever. This is no years. It's going to take a little bit to sink in."

In the team event, Holcomb switched sleds and his brakeman and anchored the U.S. to another victory in 56.20 seconds, the fastest of the eight teams competing.

"This is probably the second-best day of my life," said Holcomb, brakeman Justin Olsen at his side. "Just goes to show the depth of our team. Watch out, Sochi!"

Three years ago, Holcomb won the two-man bronze and four-man gold at worlds in Lake Placid on his home track at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

This time, he surged past first-day leader Lyndon Rush of Canada with a near-flawless third run. Holcomb and brakeman Steve Langton had a four-run time over two days of 3 minutes, 42.88 seconds, putting them 0.46 seconds ahead of Rush and brakeman Jesse Lumsden.

"This is fantastic," Langton said. "This is my fifth year in the sport and I've had some good results, but to come out here and win my first big championship is pretty amazing. It's really indescribable."

Maximilian Arndt and Kevin Kuske of Germany took the bronze, 0.55 behind Holcomb. World Cup champion Beat Hefti and Thomas Lamparter of Switzerland were fifth and John Napier and Christopher Fogt sixth for the U.S., which placed all three of its sleds in the top 10. Rookie Nick Cunningham and Dallas Robinson finished ninth.

"I'm at a loss for words," said Darrin Steele, chief executive officer of the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation. "It's been a long time for us. Holcomb's becoming a legend in his own right, and all these teams. It's just been an amazing race."

Before Sunday, the best the U.S. had done in two-man at the worlds was four silvers ? Stanley Benham (1950-51), Art Tyler (1957), and Gary Sheffield (1961). Since the discipline began at worlds in 1931, the U.S. also had collected only six bronze medals ? Brian Shimer (1997), Howard Clifton (1967), Tyler (1959), Benham (1954) and Fred Fortune (1949-50).

"I guess the hard one's out of the way. We know we can do it," said Shimer, now the men's coach. "Coming in here we were confident, but you just never know. Things worked out. I can't say enough about Holcomb. He's just an unbelievably talented pilot. Anything you throw at him he seems to get it down the hill quick."

Piloting the sled Shauna Rohbock drove to the silver in the women's race at worlds last year in Konigssee, Germany, Holcomb drove USA-1 into contention for the gold on Saturday. He recovered from a shaky first run to finish the day second, just 0.12 seconds behind Rush.

Before he climbed out of the sled for the ride back to the top between runs on the first day, Holcomb already knew what had gone wrong and sent word: "Got it figured out. Time to make my move," he tweeted.

Holcomb cut Rush's lead in half with a sterling second run, the fastest of the 27 sleds that completed the run, and kept up the pressure in Sunday's first heat.

Rush slid first, getting the advantage of clean ice for being the first-day leader, but he bobbled in the tricky curve just past the midpoint of the 20-curve layout and finished the run in 55.86 seconds.

Next up was Holcomb, and after a strong start of 5.07 seconds ? the best of the heat ? he laid down a time of 55.54 seconds, the fastest of any team in all four heats as Shimer gave them a thumbs-up, a big smile creasing his face at the finish.

That put the American duo in command with a lead of 0.20 seconds over Rush and 0.26 ahead of Arndt.

In the span of two runs, Holcomb and Langton had gained nearly a half-second on the Canadians. But this is a sport where mistakes come swiftly.

"Need to stay focused and relaxed and do it again. The race isn't over," Holcomb tweeted before the final run.

Holcomb did just that, placing the finishing touch on the day with a final run of 55.63 seconds, beaten only by fourth-place finishers Francesco Friedrich and Marko Huebenbecker of Germany.

"Yesterday, if that was World Cup I would have won, even though I wasn't the best team," said Rush, who was fighting a stomach bug. "But at world championships, the Olympic Games, the best team wins. Hats off to them. They're the best team. We weren't really that close when you think about it. We had a lead going into the third heat and just got blasted."

Just as he did three years ago, Holcomb skipped the final two races of the World Cup season ? he still finished seventh in two-man and sixth in four-man ? to prepare for worlds as the coaches took a calculated gamble putting him in a different sled. Shimer said only time would tell if the gamble was worth it.

It was.

"Phenomenal," Holcomb said. "I always wondered when we won the world championships (in 2009) if the second one was ever going to be as nice."

The team event is consists of one heat in four disciplines ? men's and women's skeleton, women's bobsled, and men's two-man bobsled.

Team USA-1 also also included bobsledders Elana Meyers and Emily Azevedo, and skeleton sliders Katie Uhlaender and Matt Antoine. They finished in 3 minutes, 44.98 seconds. That was 0.73 seconds ahead of Germany 1, and 1.3 seconds ahead of third-place Canada 1.

Home staging tips from Open House NYC (Peter Comitini of The ...

architecture and designIn this Tips of the Trade segment from Open House NYC, stager Cathy Hobbs gives us a common sense walk-through on the importance of properly presenting a property for sale. Staging on my exclusives can range from working with me to make recommendations on painting, and tweaking the placement of your furniture? to more industrial strength work with professionals, who are able to create the aura of a complete home, with furniture, linens, and tooth brushes, in an otherwise vacant apartment; and all points in between. Turning it into an attractive product for sale, by neutralizing the owner's imprint on their home, into a place that your buyer can imagine themselves living in. There are some tips worth watching in here.

From Cathy Hobbs online:
Cathy's Top Home Staging Tips:
  • Choose furniture that doesn't overcrowd a space but instead shows how spacious and roomy it is.
  • Layer your decor, add items such as throws and toss pillows.
  • Use repetition. Large pieces of art can be expensive. One of my favorite design tricks is to repeat the same piece of art in a series of two or three.
  • Choose an area rug either first or last. Choosing it first allows for it to serve as design and color inspiration, using it last, helps tie everything together.
  • Think function first, when it comes time to sell your home, it is critical that potential buyers know how a space could be used.

When it comes time to sell your home, you are going to want to sell it for the most amount of money in the shortest amount of time. HBT: Burnett lucky to be heading to Pirates

It?s a small sample size for sure, but when Jeremy Guthrie was traded earlier this month, I pointed out how the last nine established starting pitchers to leave the AL East lowered their ERAs by an average of a full run upon setting up shop elsewhere.

If A.J. Burnett can keep that up after the Yankees and Pirates agreed to a trade Friday, the 35-year-old right-hander is looking at an ERA right around 4.00 this season.

After a successful first season in New York, Burnett finished with ERAs of 5.26 and 5.15 in his final two years in Pinstripes. Given that he?s a two-pitch pitcher who has lost something off his fastball, it?s easy to see why the Yankees wanted to move on.

Still, Burnett did manage to strike out 173 batters in 190 1/3 innings last season. Now that he?ll get to face pitchers instead of designated hitters, he could fan even more batters this season. And he?s going from baseball?s toughest division for pitchers to what might be its easiest in the NL Central. Burnett had a 6.22 ERA in AL East play last season. In 2010, it was 5.82.

So, no, Burnett is no longer worth anywhere near $17 million per season. But $13 million over two years, which is what the Pirates will be paying him, seems like a pretty fair price. Once one of the game?s most injury-prone starters, Burnett has no made 32 starts four years running. He?s not going to lead the Pirates back to the postseason, but he should be an asset.

Norton 360 Version 6.0

New versions of Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security appear in the fall each year, along with the majority of antivirus and security suite tools. Not so Norton 360. The latest version, Norton 360 Version 6.0 ($89.99/year direct for three licenses), is just out now. On the one hand, this offset schedule means that Norton 360 users sometimes have to wait a few months for features already present in the suite and antivirus. On the other hand, Symantec gets an opportunity to release even newer features without waiting a whole year.

The most obvious difference between Norton 360 and Norton Internet Security is the user interface. Symantec has made it clear that Norton 360 is aimed at the average user who just wants protection while Norton Internet Security lets expert users dig deeper. In truth, these days they're not so very different. If the added backup and tuneup features found in Norton 360 appeal to you, choose it over Norton Internet Security.

Self-Healing Installer
Malware can easily interfere with security installations that rely on the standard Windows installer. Like other Norton products, Norton 360 uses Symantec's "self-healing" installer. It can take steps to counter malware that tries to block installation. Once installed, if something goes wrong with the product it sends a coded message to Symantec central and, in most cases, gets back a script that will fix the problem automatically.

I've had occasions to see this feature in action. On one test system, the installer ran a quick virus scan, requested a reboot, and proceeded without incident. Another sent an error query and apparently received a fix.

Collin Davis, Senior Director of Engineering for Symantec, called this automated system "an opportunity to delight customers." Because so many routine little problems are handled automatically, said Davis, support agents have more time to spend with customers whose problems go beyond the usual.

Norton Management
Norton Management, introduced with the 2012 Norton products, expands on the existing Norton Account concept to allow management of all your protected computers online. With the latest release Norton 360 now connects to Norton Management as well.

From the Norton Management console you can manage licenses for all your Norton products including Norton Internet Security, Norton AntiVirus, Norton Anti-Theft, and Norton Mobile Security. You can update licenses with new keys, uninstall products remotely (so as to re-use the key), and even correct configuration problems remotely.

The features offered by Norton Management are similar to the online management portion of McAfee All Access ($99.95 direct for? licenses, 4.5 stars), except that you purchase your licenses separately.

Intelligent Firewall
Norton's firewall does everything a firewall should, and then some. It stealths all ports, making the PC invisible from outside the local network. My attempts to disable its protection in ways a malware coder might manage had no effect. And its control over internet access permissions for programs on your system is more intelligent than most.

Aggregated information from the millions of Norton users feeds into the Norton Insight database. The firewall automatically configures permissions for hundreds of millions of known good files, and the suite automatically terminates known bad files. When the firewall encounters an unknown program attempting Internet access, it applies extra behavioral scrutiny and smacks down the program if it tries anything nasty.

I very much approve of security tools that take responsibility for their own decisions. Asking the user whether to allow or deny a particular network connection just doesn't make sense.

As usual, I found that Norton ignores most leak tests. These demonstration programs attempt to connect with the Internet without being caught by program control, but since they're not actually harmful Norton leaves them alone. I did notice that the SONAR behavior-tracking technology silently whacked one of the leak tests when it made its connection attempt.

Norton is also extremely effective at identifying and blocking Web-based attacks on potential system vulnerabilities. I attacked a test system with 30 exploits generated by the Core IMPACT penetration tool. After the first attack, Norton put the penetration-testing system's IP address on a blacklist; I had to turn off intrusion auto-blocking in order to complete the test. Norton blocked every single exploit and identified most of them by name.

Celebs suit up for DirecTV Beach Bowl (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Deion Sanders said he wasn't worried. Joe Montana went in with his game face on and Jordin Sparks just hoped sand did not end up in her eyes.

Athletes and celebrities had different strategies as they prepared to play in the sixth annual DirectTV Celebrity Beach Bowl. The event teams up stars with former and current professional athletes for a flag football game on the sand.

Assistant coach Neil Patrick Harris admitted he didn't know much about the game, so he was going to rely on his teammates to make the calls.

"I really am not competitive at all. I quite frankly don't know what is going to happen or what we are playing," the actor said with a smile. "I know it is football of some sort, but it might be flag football, touch, two-handed touch. I don't know."

Lucky for him, legend Joe Montana was on his team.

"I hate to lose," Montana said ahead of the game. "I am not very good at losing. You try to go into this as it's going to be a fun game, but as soon as you get involved ... if they score, you go, `OK.' You have got to at least keep it competitive. I can't just go through the motions. I want to win."

Sparks arrived with her dad, Phillippi Sparks, a former New York Giant. The former "American Idol" champ says she wasn't expecting intense action.

"I know it is not tackle. They are just grabbing the flag, but who knows, we could get tripped up and stuff, so I am glad there is sand," she said. "I am nervous about it getting in my eyes if I fall but other than that, it is going to be a lot of fun. I am excited. "

As for the other big game in Indianapolis, Sanders said he would not pick the New England Patriots or the New York Giants to win on Sunday.

"I am a former player. I am not rooting for anybody. I just want a good quality game. I just want the fans to be entertained for three and a half hours. I want Madonna to come out and do the doggone thing like she can do it," he said of her halftime performance.

Other big names at the event included Peyton Manning, Chace Crawford, Cam Newton, Terrell Owens and David Arquette, who said he's been having a great time in Indianapolis.

"What I really like about Super Bowl in general is that it introduces you to another city," he said. "Indianapolis is a beautiful city a lot of people might not know about or have not visited. To come here and to meet the people and see the city, that is my favorite part actually."

India's Supreme Court deals blow to corruption ? and foreign investors

India?s Supreme Court has ordered the government to cancel telecommunications licenses awarded in 2008 that are at the center of one of the country?s largest corruption scandals.

India's Supreme Court today issued a landmark decision against government corruption. The move will ultimately raise international confidence in India, but in the short term investors may stay away while the country cleans house.

The court revoked a set of telecom licenses granted in 2008 through a rigged government bid. The ?2G scam? ? which became India?s largest public corruption scandal ? robbed government coffers of about $40 billion. Today?s ruling will strip companies of the underpriced licenses and allow the government to resell them at more competitive rates.

This sudden upheaval in the cellphone market is the sort of volatility caused by a corruption crackdown that has made investors nervous during the past year.

Foreign investors fled India last year for a number of reasons, including uncertainty about what business-as-usual corruption might suddenly be uncovered and punished. In the short-term, the decision spells out more economic woes for the world's fourth-largest economy ? which was, until recently, a beacon of hope during the darkest hours of the global recession.

?This will have a hugely negative impact on future foreign investment because it sends a signal that a license issued by the government of India has no meaning and could be considered null and void because of a judgment two or three years down the line,? said Rishi Sahai, director of the consulting firm Cogence Advicor, according to a roundup of reactions by The New York Times.

As of press time, share prices in one of the license losers, Norway?s Telenor, have fallen nearly 5 percent today.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) placed only $8.4 billion in India in 2011, roughly a fifth of the $39.5 billion they invested the previous year. The investor pullout began at the start of 2011 and the trend was flagged early by Espirito Santo Investment Bank.?

?In all our interactions with FIIs the tone has changed and corruption and ensuing political risk has without question become a major concern,? reads a January 2011 assessment from Espirito Santo.

Swiss voters to decide on mandatory army service (AP)

GENEVA ? Switzerland's government says an advocacy group has collected enough signatures to prompt a vote on whether to end the nation's long tradition of compulsory army service.

The Federal Chancellery said Thursday that the Group for a Switzerland Without an Army, or GSoA, collected 106,995 valid signatures. At least 100,000 signatures were needed to hold the vote.

A 19th century law requires all able-bodied male citizens to serve between the ages of 19 and 34 for an initial basic training of up to 21 weeks and then a few weeks a year after that.

Two-thirds of Swiss voters backed keeping military duty in 1989. GSoA says a new vote would be held after the Defense Ministry reports back on the proposal a year from now.

Change of Ownership/Management | Talk About Business

When you buy a new property or change management companies, you need to let tenants know who is now handling their transactions, how to contact the new owners or the management company, where to send payments, and how to handle such issues as automatic draft or electronic payments. While you could call a tenant meeting and provide this information, it is important to establish a paper trail. A Change of Ownership Management form is the ideal solution, as you can place a copy of the completed form in each tenant?s file. That way, when a tenant states his payment is late because he did not know where to send it, you have proof to show that he was notified in a timely manner.

Pairing masks and hand washing could drastically slow spread of a pandemic flu

ScienceDaily (Jan. 31, 2012) ? Masks and hand hygiene could cut the spread of flu-like symptoms up to 75 percent, a University of Michigan study found.

A new report shows the second-year results (2007-2008) of the ground-breaking U-M M-Flu study found up to a 75 percent reduction in flu-like illness over the study period when using hand hygiene and wearing surgical masks in residence halls, said Allison Aiello, associate professor of epidemiology in the U-M School of Public Health. Aiello and Dr. Arnold Monto, SPH professor of epidemiology, are co-principal investigators of the M-Flu study.

While the study also showed a 43 percent reduction in the rate of flu, it wasn't statistically significant. Students were more likely to report influenza-like symptoms than to provide laboratory samples for confirmed cases, Aiello said. "This might have impacted our power for detecting significant differences in confirmed flu," she said.

The results from both years found no significant reduction in symptoms in mask use alone, which suggests masks and hand hygiene should be used together, she said.

At the beginning of a pandemic, vaccines probably won't be available immediately so one of the first lines of defense to stop the spread of illness will be non-pharmaceutical interventions like hand hygiene and face masks. The M-Flu results bode well for these types of non-pharmaceutical interventions in the community setting for pandemic preparedness, Aiello said.

"This means masks and hand hygiene may be a good measure for preventing transmissions in crowded living quarters," said Aiello. "In a pandemic situation where compliance may be significantly higher than in controlled studies, masks and hand hygiene together may have even higher preventative implications."

The M-Flu study was the first of its kind and received international exposure when launched in 2006. The team of M-Flu researchers recruited more than 1,000 students in U-M residence halls. The students were assigned to groups who wore masks, wore masks and practiced hand hygiene, or did neither. They were monitored for the presence of flu symptoms or the flu.

The study was the first to test the effectiveness of these measures for primary prevention before people become sick or exhibited symptoms in the university setting, Monto said.

"Ultimately, this research could help the development of national policies for pandemic preparedness," Monto said.

The goal of M-Flu was to estimate the reduction in rate of flu infection and illness attributed to masks and hand sanitizers, and masks alone during two flu seasons. The results in year two were similar to year one with substantial reductions in flu-like symptoms. Students in both studies were asked to wear masks in the residence halls for six hours per day and clean their hands with an alcohol based hand sanitizer in addition to soap and water hand washing.

The group is planning another study involving campus residence halls, this time to evaluate the effect of voluntary sequestration on the flu in residence halls. Details and a timeline for that study are not available yet.

The M-Flu study was a collaboration among the School of Public Health, University of Michigan Housing and the University Health Service. In addition to Aiello and Monto, authors include current students or graduates of the U-M SPH: Rebecca Coulborn, Brian Davis, and Vanessa Perez; and a colleague at Wayne State University, Monica Uddin.
