Wooden Wallets. WTF? [Chatroom]

Over the past couple of months, wooden wallets have caught on as a trend in the design world. Like this one. Or this one. Or even this one. Aside from looking like they'd be an uncomfortable, cumbersome mass occupying your back pocket. they're kind of the antithesis of design. Design is supposed to address a need or improve on an idea. I'm not seeing it with these. Seriously, who really wants a wood wallet? Image Credit: Haydanhuya More »

Researchers develop spray-on batteries

A team of researchers from Rice University has found a way to power almost any object by spraying with a paint that has been formulated to function as a battery.

By Charles Q. Choi, InnovationNewsDaily Contributor,?InnovationNewsDaily / June 28, 2012

Ceramic tiles coated with battery paints and then heat-sealed powered LEDs spelling out "RICE" for six hours in an experiment at Rice University. The lithium-ion batteries can be painted on virtually any surface.

The rechargeable lithium-ion batteries now found in many mobile phones and laptops may one day be sprayed like paint onto virtually any surface, potentially ushering in a new generation of thin, flexible devices, researchers say.

Spray-paintable batteries even might become available to the general public someday at hardware stores, the scientists added.

Lithium-ion batteries power most portable electronics nowadays, but their spiral, jelly-roll-like design generally limits them to rectangular or cylindrical shapes.

['Smart Clothing' Could Become New Wearable Gadgets]

Now researchers have succeeded in painting these batteries onto a diverse range of surfaces, including glass slides, stainless steel, flexible plastic sheets, glazed ceramic tiles, and even the curved side of a beer mug.

"We can convert almost any object to a battery," Neelam Singh, a materials scientist at Rice University in Houston, told InnovationNewsDaily.

He and other researchers spent painstaking hours formulating paints that could function as the separate components of a battery. In their search, they looked at materials as diverse as carbon nanotubes and ultrafine graphite powders. They next painted these ingredients in layers in the proper order onto surfaces to create the batteries.

"Spray painting is already an industrial process, so it would be very easy to incorporate this into industry," Singh said.

Batteries that the researchers printed onto nine ceramic bathroom tiles could readily power 40 red LED lights. One of these battery tiles was topped with a solar power cell that helped charge the batteries, suggesting the researchers could give any surface the capability to both harvest and store energy.

The material onto which the batteries were painted apparently had no effect on the performance of the devices. This suggests this technology could find its way into a wide range of construction materials and household objects.

"You could turn your home into a battery," Singh said.

The researchers do caution that fabricating these batteries requires the use of toxic, flammable and potentially corrosive materials in an oxygen-free and moisture-free environment. Employing safer battery materials along with oxygen- and moisture-resistant paints could allow even the general public to spray-paint batteries.

[Transparent Batteries Help Mobile Devices Go See-Through]

"People paint their homes and cars often," Singh said. "I think it will be possible for people to paint batteries themselves."

The scientists have filed for a patent on their work. They detailed their findings online June 28 in the journal Scientific Reports.

Four out of five drivers say they're distracted?

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

If you?ve ever texted while driving or sent out a Tweet, well, you aren?t alone.? In fact, you?re far from the minority, it seems.? A new Harris Poll reveals that more than four out of five motorists admit to making some sort of distracted driving behavior in a typical month.

Men, it turns out, are more likely to engage in this potentially dangerous behavior, according to the latest Harris AutoTechCast study, particularly when it comes to taking or making a phone call.? Younger motorists are more likely to do things like texting.

Some of the behaviors might not normally land on a list of dangerous activities, such as drinking a beverage, but the risky behaviors begin to add up ? to an average 37 different distracted driving activities over the last month, according to Harris Interactive, which conducted the poll.

New Ford Tech Will Aid Drivers Park, Reduce Traffic Gridlock

?Most common on the list is making to taking a call, something that the typical driver does 11 times a month, with motorists drinking beverages behind the wheel eight times, texting five times and e-mailing three times.

Men were more likely to use their cellphones, 12 times a month compared to 10 for women.? Motorists between 18 and 34 were far more likely, on the whole, to engage in distracted driving behaviors, however, about 57 times a month.

Curiously, while data suggested that distracted driving is, if anything, becoming more endemic, the Harris AutoTechCast poll found motorists increasingly interested in advanced automotive safety technologies ? perhaps in the hope of avoiding distracted driving-related accidents.

?While ideally these drivers should practice fewer of these distracted driving habits,? stated Mike Chadsey, Vice President, Automotive Solutions Consultant, Harris Interactive, ?it is also comforting to know that this distracted driving group is aware of the importance of safety features and is actively considering them for their next vehicle purchase.?

Wyoming Has Highest Auto Repair Costs

When it comes to gaining access to new infotainment technologies, motorists want to be able to get there by docking their smartphones ? by nearly a 2-to-1 margin ? over having such features built into the vehicle.

Among apps motorists say they use on their smartphones, 66% named Google Maps, 65% reported Google Search, 64% identified Facebook, 41% named Pandora while just 32% listed Twitter.

Honda Named Automotive Brand of the Year

?Consumers are indicating that they want their automotive technology to help improve safety while giving them more flexibility, even if it costs a little more,? added Chadsey. ?Personalization is the future of the connected car. Drivers want to use technology they already know and love in their vehicles. By integrating technologies they already own, it also eliminates some of the technology usage issues plaguing the industry today.?

The AutoTechCast survey tallied responses from nearly 12,000 Americans over the age of 18 who own or lease their vehicle.

How to Make your Online Advertising Business Produce Money on Internet Marketing

The success or failure of your Internet marketing business depends largely on the Internet users. If they are interested on the products and services that you are offering for sale, definitely you can expect hundreds to thousands of dollars in revenues from your online business. On the other hand, if they are just too lazy to hear what you want to say and what you are offering, better shut down your personal computer unit and find some other ways of earning money.

As an Internet marketer, you do not want the second scenario to happen to your Internet marketing career. To be the ?exception to the rule?, you must attract more web visitors to your site and turn them into long-term clients and build a loyal clientele base. Once you have satisfied such requirements, expect that there is something in return?positive returns, to be specific.

How will you say to Internet users that you need them to keep your online business alive? In fact, you need not to tell them straight to the point that you badly need them. All you need is a clever mind and some online advertising to get them without making them realize that you badly need them.

There are various online advertising methods on the Internet and each method has their product that works better on specific industries. There are huge numbers of individuals and companies operating online who wants to advertise what they have to offer, and there are also huge numbers of individuals and companies on the Internet who are willing to provide some advertising spaces. However, considering that the online advertising market is quite large, it will be inefficient for the advertisers as well as the providers of these online advertising spaces to individually meet and talk about the terms of conditions of advertising.

The individual or company who wish to advertise will certainly contact an online-based advertising company that are willing to provide the space that the advertiser needs as well as distribute their advertisements to different venues on the Internet at the same time.

The more benefits are now towards the online advertising firm. And you are considering an online advertising business.

But before you go, there are several things you need to consider first.

Start to gather a collection of websites or online companies that are willing to place advertisements on their sites. Select sites that are getting high web traffic every month. Once you have gathered advertising site venues, you may now start soliciting advertising clients. These advertisers will pay a certain amount of money that will commensurate with the exposure of their products or services on your advertising site venues. For instance, if you have contracted with 20 websites that are receiving an average of 200,000 web visitors every month, you can sell as much as 2,000,000 advertising exposures every month on each advertiser. In case that you have negotiated around 20 advertising venues on each website, you can sell an equivalent of 20 advertising clients with 2,000,000 advertising exposures every month. If an advertiser only pays for 1,000,000 advertising exposures, you can still sell the remaining 1,000,000 advertising exposures for a total of 11 advertising clients.

Now, what are the types of online advertising that you can offer? Here are some of the offerings that you can sell to individuals or companies who wish to advertise their products or services on the Internet.

? Banner ads- these ads are typically pictorial ads that are commonly viewed on high-traffic sites and includes a hyperlink back to the advertiser?s own site. These are priced according to the number of ads shown. For instance, banner ads can be sold in lots of 250,000 impressions each. ? Sponsorship ads- these ads are commonly larger than banner ads, which sometimes contain considerable amount of text. These are typically placed on high-traffic areas such as ezines or online newsletters. It is priced according to the number of readers of the newsletter or publication in which the ad is placed. ? Pay per click (PPC) ads- these ads are priced according to the number of clicks generated through site visitors, These are commonly text ads, though there are PPC ads that are pictorial-based.

Starting your own online advertising business is another opportunity of earning more money on the Internet marketing industry.

Egyptian president moves into Mubarak's old office

CAIRO (AP) ? As Mohammed Morsi moved Monday into the presidential office last occupied by Hosni Mubarak, the contours emerged Monday of a backroom deal that led Egypt's powerful military council to bless the Islamist as the country's first freely elected head of state.

The complex web of issues still to be hammered out range from what to do about the dissolved parliament and the drafting of a new constitution to who will head the Cabinet and hold the key defense and foreign ministries.

Still, the country breathed a sigh of relief that at least the question of who won the presidential runoff had been resolved on Sunday when Egypt's election commission officially recognized the 60-year-old U.S.-trained engineer as the first civilian and the first Islamist to hold the post.

People returned to work a day after a panic sent many home early for fear that violence might erupt when the winner was announced. Traffic was flowing again through Cairo's Tahrir Square, the birthplace of last year's uprising, which had been blocked by Morsi supporters protesting against the military's power grab.

Newspapers were brimming with upbeat headlines, after a week of rumors and scaremongering. "Morsi president on orders from the people: The revolution reaches the presidential palace," said a banner headline in independent daily Al-Shorouk.

Still, Morsi's recognition as president-elect does not resolve the larger standoff between the generals and his Muslim Brotherhood over the institutions of government.

After the generals stripped the presidency of most of its major powers in recent weeks, Morsi takes office without a clear picture of his authorities or what he can do to resolve Egypt's most pressing issues, including restoring stability and security, and improving the struggling economy.

Morsi narrowly defeated Ahmed Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister and a former air force general, in a race that deeply polarized the nation and threatened to unleash violent protests. Now he faces a daunting struggle for power with the still-dominant military rulers who took over after Mubarak's ouster in the uprising.

State TV showed footage of Morsi meeting Monday with the ruling military council headed by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who was Mubarak's defense minister for 20 years. The TV quoted Tantawi as saying the military will "stand by the elected, legitimate president and will cooperate with him for the stability of the country."

Morsi also met with the military-backed Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri, who resigned Monday and was asked to head a caretaker government until Morsi nominates a new one.

Lawmakers and mediators were tightlipped about the details of the negotiations, although they acknowledged that a few round of talks with the generals took place last week and are ongoing ? a sign that much remains undone.

"There is a political settlement initiative that takes everyone's concerns into account," said Muslim Brotherhood member and lawmaker Sobhi Saleh.

But deep mistrust remains. The ruling generals have stacked their side with a maze of legal tools that strengthen their negotiating position, while the Brotherhood must tread softly: The talks can easily blow up into wider social discontent if the Islamist group appears to be looking out only for its own partisan interests and trying to entrench its grip on power.

Emad Abdel-Ghaffour, the head of the ultraconservative Islamist party Al-Nour, said in the week between the June 16-17 presidential runoff and the announcement of the winner on Sunday, many politicians tried to mediate between the Islamists and the generals.

"There was an easing (of tension)" when the elections results came through, he said. But discussions are still under way to clarify the authorities of the president and the military. And one of the immediate sticking points is the dissolution of the Muslim Brotherhood-dominated parliament by a court order, days before the presidential runoff.

As polls closed on June 17, the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces announced constitutional amendments that shocked the Brotherhood and many other political activists who took part in the uprising 16 months ago.

The ruling generals gave themselves sweeping powers that undercut the authority of the president. That followed a government decision that granted military police broad powers to detain civilians. The military council, which promised to transfer power to an elected leader by July 1, said the moves were designed to fill a power vacuum and ensure that the president doesn't monopolize decision-making until a new constitution is drafted.

Two days before the runoff, a court packed with judged appointed by the Mubarak regime also dissolved the country's first freely elected parliament, which was dominated by Islamists. The military council followed by declaring it was now in charge of legislating.

Closed-door meetings between Brotherhood members and the ruling generals as well as mediation from different groups, including pro-reform leader Mohammed ElBaradei, aimed at easing the crisis and defusing a political stalemate.

Brotherhood members said the election results, delayed for four days, were held up by authorities as a bargaining chip to reassure the generals in the face of mounting Brotherhood opposition to the military's tightening grip and the group's rise to power.

Former presidents were sworn in by parliament. But with the parliament dissolved, it was not clear where Morsi will be sworn in. Authorities say he could be sworn before the country's highest court, but his supporters are pressing for parliament to be reinstated, arguing that the court decision only disputed a third of the house's seats.

Abdel-Ghaffour said discussions with the generals centered on the Brotherhood's argument that only the disputed third of parliament be dissolved because it was that portion that was elected based on articles deemed unconstitutional. Independent and party members competed for a third of the 498-seat house, which the court said violated rules of equality between candidates.

Brotherhood lawyers say another court, Egypt's highest administrative court, is likely to back their claim.

"This is likely to happen," said Abdel-Ghaffour, whose Islamist party won 25 percent of the dissolved parliament seats in addition to the Brotherhood's nearly 50 percent. "A third of parliament can be dissolved and re-elected in 75 days."

The speaker of the dissolved parliament met with the No. 2 general on the military council, Chief of Staff Gen. Sami Anan, twice since the court decision on June 14.

Abdel-Ghaffour also said talks centered on reassurances the generals were seeking regarding the Brotherhood's control of the new government, including demands that Morsi appoint a prime minister who is a technocrat from outside the Brotherhood.

The stickier issue of drafting the constitution was also raised as well as fears over who controls the key foreign and defense ministries. The generals' new declaration ensures the military appoint the defense minister and control all issues regarding military personnel.

Before parliament was dissolved, a panel appointed by the legislature was supposed to be in charge of drafting the new constitution which would determine the role of Islam in legislation, Egypt's future political system and the role of the military.

In the recent power grab, the ruling generals gave themselves, the prime minister, judges or a fifth of the panel members the right to veto details of the constitution that will be drafted, curbing the powers of Islamists to control the process. The parliament-formed panel is expected to meet Tuesday, and Abdel-Ghaffour said it is expected to continue its work.

"Both sides want reassurances," Abdel-Ghaffour said. "But there is a will for the caravan to keep moving," he said, using an Arabic expression.

Brotherhood officials said protests will continue until the military responds to their demands.

Saad Emara, another Brotherhood lawmaker, said allowing the military to determine these posts will further erode the authority of the president. "They are hardening their position," he said. "Our presence in the square as protesters is the best negotiating card."

Thousands of Morsi supporters, backed by some liberal and secular youth groups who drove the uprising, vowed to press on with their protest in Tahrir Square to pressure the ruling generals to rescind their decrees and reinstate parliament. Tens of thousands spent the night in Tahrir in joyous celebration of Morsi's win. After thinning in the morning, the crowd built up again by Monday evening.

Islam Lotfi, a former Brotherhood member who has formed a new party and was part of a Brotherhood-led front to protest against the military power grab, said there are efforts to create a representative committee to negotiate with the generals over demands to abrogate the recent decisions and "truly transfer powers to civilians."

Ayman Nour, a liberal former lawmaker who is currently on the panel to draft the constitution, sounded a more cautious note.

"The situation is very ambiguous ... and no one wants a clash," said Nour. "Every coming step can create a crisis, and if it is not managed smartly, professionally and in a non-partisan way, it will only get more tangled."

Bentley's Continental GT Speed Coupe - The Fastest Model Ever

Bentley has revealed its eye-popping new high-performance model: the Continental?GT?Speed coupe. Making its international debut at the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed, this model is the fastest ever production Bentley yet.

Combining contemporary luxury and a distinctly sporting character, this new model treats its drivers to edgy yet agile handling and voguish designs.

This Continental?GT?Speed owes its majestic power and brawny nature to its twin turbocharged-W12 engine that is capable of developing 625?PS at 6000?rev/min, a torque of 800?Nm and achieves 0 to 60?mph in just 4 seconds, with an amazing speed of 205 mph.

Drive goes to all four wheels, through a new close-ratio eight-speed automatic gearbox that contributes significantly to the remarkable 12% improvement in fuel economy. The lowered ride height and tweaked steering and suspension are aimed at giving sharper handling.

Some of the features we can expect to enjoy are dark-tinted air intakes, 21 inch alloy wheels, upgraded cabin materials and ?rifled? finished exhaust tailpipes.

The Bentley Continental GT for almost a decade has defined high performance and luxury and the success of the unique W12 engine has made Bentley the world?s largest producer of 12-cylinder engines.

This Bentley is one of the best and fastest yet and apart from the stunning specification, this is one very eco-friendly car. Insight: ANC promises ring hollow in home of South Africa greats

ENTSHINGENI, South Africa (Reuters) - First graders huddle to do sums on scraps of paper pressed against a cracked mud wall at Mwezeni Primary School in South Africa's destitute Eastern Cape province.

The school may be located in Africa's wealthiest nation, but there are no chairs, no desks and no work books.

The Eastern Cape, home to giants of the African National Congress like Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu who helped end apartheid and Thabo Mbeki, the nation's second democratically elected president, is a glaring example of the ruling party's failure to deliver its promise of a "better life for all".

In Entshingeni village, not far away from where Mandela was raised, a mud hut with a dirt floor serves as a classroom to 79 first and second graders who sit on planks across rickety bench frames in front of a battered chalkboard.

"We are proud of Mr Mandela and Mr Mbeki. They came from this land and went all over the world. What will presidents overseas say if they see how we live?" said David Skwele from Mkanzini village, dressed in a tattered red T-shirt.

The ANC, in power now for 18 years, will hold a major policy conference from Tuesday next week acknowledging that "public services are uneven and often of poor quality; corruption is widespread; and South Africa remains a divided society".

While thousands of schools wait each year for textbooks and many Eastern Cape children are forced to write on loose sheets, the ANC has produced copious reams of policy papers to be studied by about 3,000 delegates at next week's meeting.

The conference is expected to lead to another blizzard of strategy documents on what the ANC calls a "second transition".

This aims to tackle what the party acknowledges as its greatest unfinished business: spreading wealth more widely and equitably in a nation whose levels of economic inequality are still among the highest in the world, a legacy of the political compromises needed to dismantle apartheid, which ended in 1994.

"Continuing with the status quo could lead South Africa into an irreversible downward spiral ... Our political transition was never only about freedom from political bondage," an ANC discussion document prepared for the policy conference says. It refers to "old fissures of race, gender, class and geography".

"GET RID OF THE ROT"

The week-long policy meeting is being held amid signs of acrimonious infighting among senior party figures ahead of another more critical conference at the end of the year which will elect the leadership and adopt strategies. President Jacob Zuma is widely expected to retain the party's top job.

The ANC proposes government taking greater control of the economy, a massive infrastructure program to create jobs and taxing mining firms more to help finance it all.

But a jaded public expect few effective measures from the conference to tackle corruption, mismanagement and cronyism that analysts see corroding governance and competitiveness in Africa's largest economy.

Party insiders insist that the ANC is aware it needs to get its house in order. This means balancing pressure from an increasingly demanding but still marginalized majority against the political clout wielded by a post-apartheid economic elite whose interests are intertwined with the ANC government.

"At 100 years, now is as good a time as any to get rid of the rot festering in the party," said one party official, who asked not to be identified while discussing internal criticism the party tries to keep behind closed doors.

A new book on South Africa by journalists Martin Plaut and Paul Holden, titled "Who rules South Africa? Pulling the strings in the battle for power", describes the country's political, economic and social state as "schizophrenic and disjointed".

"A wealthy now largely multiracial middle and upper class exists in a first world bubble that is miles away from the penury from a bottom half that has seen few gains from the post apartheid period," they wrote.

"MOUSE IN A CHEESE FACTORY"

Education has always been a priority for the ANC and the government spends nearly $1,400 a year on each student. But at hundreds of Eastern Cape schools, it is difficult to see where any of the money has gone.

The classroom shack of the Mkanzini Junior School is so rickety that teachers fear that if they tack up charts on the rusted walls, the structure will collapse.

"On sunny days we boil in here. Look at the big holes, on rainy days we are soaked and on windy days, I am afraid the shack will fall on the kids," said teacher Zoleka Nofonda, 40, who has two grades crammed in the room.

"They come because of the free meal we give them. Sometimes it's the only thing they eat all day."

The ANC, still revered for their role in bringing down apartheid, enjoys virtual one-party rule in South Africa.

In recent elections it has beaten the main opposition Democratic Alliance, largely seen as a party of white privilege in a nation that is 80 percent black, by more than 40 percentage points, although the opposition has made some gains.

Without fear of losing power, the ANC has deployed thousands of party cadres to run villages, towns and cities. But many of the movement's loyalists have proved themselves more skilled at lining their pockets with state funds than at doing their jobs.

"It is like taking a mouse from the bush and making it run a cheese factory," ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe told Reuters. He said the party was trying to rectify this.

LOST GENERATION

The delivery deficit is most acute in the Eastern Cape which receives the most funds of any province for welfare spending.

Spending here is pushed higher because the ANC government inherited sprawling "homelands", which were set up by the apartheid regime to concentrate the black majority with almost no infrastructure in designated separate areas of the country.

With poverty so deep in Eastern Cape and a local electorate closely tied to the ANC, few have sought change through the ballot box so far. But other parts of the country saw 372 protests against poor public services between January and May.

"There is very little sophistication from civil society and the electorate to hold leaders accountable," said Derek Luyt from an Eastern Cape think tank, the Public Service and Accountability Monitor.

The central government more than a year ago declared the province's education system an abject failure, and said it would intervene. But entrenched interests in the provincial ANC defied the mother body and kept control of education purse strings.

This meant little improvement for Mwezeni Primary, one of 400 schools made of mud and sticks. More than 2,300 schools in the Eastern Cape have six teachers or less.

But according to government statistics, the Eastern Cape overspends on teachers by up to $120 million a year, and civil society activists suspect the money is going to corrupt officials instead of personnel in classrooms.

"Eastern Cape has a long history of inequality and poor bureaucracy inherited from the former homelands. It's a province using old systems, where corruption and mismanagement thrives," said Yoliswa Dwane from the Equal Education advocacy group.

Nearly half of South Africa's 18 to 24 year olds - the first generation educated after apartheid - are not in the education system and have no jobs, according to government data.

This "lost" generation is seen as a weakness in Africa's largest economy which is trying to grow its tax base as it funds increased social spending.

'GHOST' WORKERS, REAL SHORTAGES

As in education, corruption is also seen eating away at resources needed to boost the health sector. Horror stories of the Eastern Cape's health woes have become a staple of media.

In May, an elite body set up to investigate corruption in the provincial government uncovered suspected graft amounting to $24 million.

In 2011, the provincial health department said nearly $100 million had "vanished" from January 2009 to June 2010 with about $54 million going to so-called 'ghost staff' who drew a paycheck and did no work, the regional Daily Dispatch reported.

Heading towards the sea on a rugged track lies Madwaleni Hospital, built by missionaries in the 1960s and staffed by foreigners because even lucrative stipends offered by the government have not proved enough to attract South African doctors.

"We are always experiencing a shortage of something. Sometimes it is medicine, sometimes it is gloves but our worst is a shortage of doctors and nurses," said a foreign doctor who did not want to be identified while discussing the hospital's shortcomings.

Human Rights Watch said in a 2011 survey that Eastern Cape had some of the worst health indicators in South Africa, including high infant, child, and maternal mortality rates.

Nofinish Nqata, 63, lives in a traditional white-washed Xhosa hut in Ngqamakhwe village in Butterworth, on land allocated to her by the local chief.

The village has no electricity or telephones. Families use pit latrines and walk long distances to collect water.

"The water we drink we share with pigs, cows and donkeys. Some people use the river banks as their toilets and when it rains it washes into the water supply."

Once a die-hard ANC loyalist, Nqata has taken the bold step of joining the Democratic Alliance.

"It hurts so much because the old men Sisulu and (former ANC president Oliver) Tambo are no longer alive and the ones who took over the baton don't share the vision the stalwarts who fought for democracy had. They care about themselves and their pockets, not us." ($1 = 8.2215 South African rand)

Flipboard officially launches on Android, in multiple app stores and for more countries

Flipboard officially launches on Android, in multiple app stores and for more countries

Popular newsreader Flipboard is finally officially available on Android, coming out of beta and Galaxy S III exclusivity. As seen in the latest test version, it now supports integration of shared articles from your Google+ feed alongside Twitter and Facebook feeds, and has also added support for YouTube video feeds (all of these are now available on iOS as well). Beyond the Google Play app market, it's also available in the Amazon Appstore, Nook Store and Samsung Apps, so slinging the APK to your Android device of choice should be too difficult.

We gave the final release edition a quick run through ourselves and found it just as smooth on a Samsung Galaxy S II as it has been on any iPhone or iPad, and being ICS-ready out of the gate is a nice touch, although we couldn't force it to switch to landscape viewing. Another handy toggle is the option to go full screen with no menu bar up top, if you need a few extra pixels on your display (optimized for screens up to 7-inches in size). Article sharing is also here and like other Android apps, shares to any services you have installed, not just Twitter or Facebook. The final update is news that Flipboard is launching fully localized editions for Germany, Korea, Italy, Spain and The Netherlands, in addition to the existing localizations for Japan, France, China, United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. All of the details are in the press release after the break, or you can check out pretty much any app store to give it a try yourself.

Update: It's out! As of 1AM or so. Hit the source link to grab it from the Play Store.

Species-Specific Microbes May Be Key to a Healthy Immune System

News | Health

Mice raised with human microbiomes never develop mature immune systems, which may explain the rise in immunological illnesses

immune system microbiomeOf Mice's Microbes and Man's New research is showing how important the right mix of microbiota is for our health. Image: iStockphoto/Himerka

?

Mice have a jungle of bacteria, viruses and fungi in their stomachs?and so do we. These microorganisms help both mice and us break down dinner. As we are finding, these bugs also help to regulate the immune system. But we are just starting to learn how these tiny organisms influence us and how changing their composition changes us.

In an attempt to find out, postdoctoral researcher Hachung Chung and her colleagues at Dennis Kasper's Lab at Harvard Medical School tried raising mice with exclusively human gut microbiota.

The human microbes did pretty well in the mice guts (the researchers could tell by culturing fecal pellets from these mice). Interestingly, though, the mice with these microbes did not: their immune systems remained underdeveloped. Even when researchers gave rat microbiota to mice, the mice's immune systems failed to mature. The results were published in the June 22 issue of Science.

The findings are "perhaps the most definitive that I've seen," says Eugene Chang, a professor of medicine at the University of Chicago, who was not involved in the new study. They show "the critical and specific relationship between host and gut microbes, which is needed for proper development of the host immune response," he says.

The results support the thinking that we humans have coevolved with our microbes?and we're probably not the same without them. "The selection of partners is not by chance," Chang says. And that might explain why as we alter our microbiomes?with antibiotics and superclean upbringings?our immune systems have been changing as well, ushering in increasing rates of autoimmune conditions such as allergies and diabetes. "The consequence is that the balance between us and our microbes, determined through evolution, is upset in ways that impact our health and increase risk for many diseases that were previously uncommon," he notes.

Starting germ-free
For these experiments, starting germ-free is key. These extra-clean mouse colonies have been living for several years?and many generations?without contact even with the lab environment, so their stomachs remain in a prenatal state (as with humans): sans microbes.

The upside to a germ-free mouse facility is that because the animals' cages are sealed in airtight areas, it smells much better than rooms with standard caged lab mice. The downside is that they take a lot of care. Tools, food, bedding and water have to be sterilized via autoclave and introduced through a double-valve seal. Lab technicians and researchers reach into the cages with plastic gloves that are built into the sealed clear covers similar to the enclosure immunodeficient David Vetter, called the "bubble boy," lived in during his short life. A year after starting at the lab, Chung got married. And perhaps even more so than the food, flowers and guest list, she says, she planned the event largely around the mice.

Chung and her fellow researchers were interested in what happened if these mice got non-mousy microbiomes. To compare reactions with different microbiome compositions, Chung could then give these germ-free mice either human, mouse or rat microbiota (by feeding them microbiomes cultured from feces). One group was kept germ-free as a control.

Celeb Real Estate: Diane Keaton settles down

By Staff, Zillow

This week in celebrity real estate, serial flipper Diane Keaton bought a move-in ready home, Merv Griffin's estate took a price cut and Patty Duke's former home hit the market.

Diane Keaton buys newer Pacific Palisades home for $5.75 million

Zillow

Diane Keaton's new home was built in 2009.

Now this is a surprising role for Diane Keaton. The Hollywood house restorer extraordinaire appears to have bought a house that?doesn't need a thing!

After years of restoring luxurious Hollywood homes and earning a spot as an Architectural Digest mainstay for the way her renovated homes have been re-sold to other celebs, Keaton is trying something new: Buying a house that's move-in ready.

Of course, the home could just be a "placeholder" for Keaton and her two teenage kids. In the latest issue of AARP magazine, Keaton says she is looking for a new challenge.

According to the LA Times, the 7,800-square-foot, 6-bed, 9-bath home has three levels of living space, including an entertainer's space on the lower level that has a large temperature-controlled wine cellar, movie theater and private gym. Sitting on a nearly a quarter-acre, the home embraces an indoor-outdoor lifestyle with a wraparound grassy yard, pool and spa, as well as patio with grill and outdoor kitchen.

Other Keaton properties include:

  • A Spanish-Colonial revival in Beverly Hills (purchased by Glee creator Ryan Murphy)
  • Lloyd Wright?s Los Feliz landmark Samuel-Novarro House (she sold to Christina Ricci)
  • Wallace Neff-designed Spanish-style estate in Beverly Hills (sold to Madonna)
  • Bel-Air hacienda designed in the style of George Washington Smith
  • Spanish-style hillside home in Laguna Beach

Zillow

Much of the home is characterized by gleaming dark hardwoods and details like crown moldings and built-in shelving.

Many of the homes living areas open out to the patio.

Merv Griffin's 39-acre luxury ranch takes a price cut

Zillow

Merv Griffin's former estate features an enormous pond with fountain.

By the time Merv Griffin passed away in 2007 at the age of 82 from prostate cancer, the entertainer and talk-show host had amassed a fortune estimated at around $1 billion. A lot of that came from his real estate investments, including famous hotels and casinos.

Now, the 39-acre, Palm Springs-area estate that Griffin used as his desert base is available at a significant price cut. The Moroccan-themed property, which is also a horse farm where Griffin bred Arabians, at 81345 Avenue 54 in La Quinta, Calif., has been re-listed for $9.5 million.

The property was one of Griffin's most creative enterprises, as he described it in an interview two years before his death. The property includes 14 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms spread among 20,000 square feet of living space. There is a lavish, 5,000-square-foot main house and four, one-bedroom poolside casitas. The property remains a testament to the old-style Hollywood way of livin' large.

Zillow

Touches of Mediterranean and Moroccan decor are found throughout the home.

Warm feelings about Patty Duke's former home has not resulted in a sale -- yet

Zillow

Patty Duke's former home sits on a shady, private lot in Beverly Glen.

Look hard enough and you'll find a lot of Los Angeles homes for sale?come with their own well-chronicled histories, thanks to generations of entertainment-world inhabitants.

On that note, the Beverly Hills home once owned by Patty Duke is on the market. She owned the property from 1966 until 1970 at 1600 Summitridge Drive?in the Beverly Glen neighborhood of the world-famous 90210 ZIP code.

The 5-bedroom, 6-bathroom house with 360-degree views of Los Angeles has been on the market for the better part of 15 months. Its current list price of $5.395 million is down from the original $6.5 million in March 2011.

The home was built in 1942 and has been maintained in pristine, move-in condition. It has found a new selling point as real estate experts in the real estate market have started to connect its history to Duke, as well as Sharon Tate and Polanski. The later pair were unable to buy the Duke home and instead moved across the street to the infamous house on Cielo Drive (now torn down and replaced) where Tate was murdered by Charles Manson.

Long before Miley Cyrus or Selena Gomez or Hillary Duff or even Marlo Thomas, Duke was the talented young star whose television series helped interpret and reflect modern American life and culture circa 1960.

But when Duke was trying to leave behind "The Patty Duke Show" and the persona(s) she created -- she played herself and her cousin, a la Haley Mills in "The Parent Trap'' -- she went looking for new roles. That's how she would end up fighting for a part in the perfectly dreadful, but box-office success "Valley of the Dolls."

Zillow

Downtown Los Angeles is visible from the home's large deck.

Zillow

The interiors feature an open living space.
