WrestleMania Reading Challenge World Finals 2012

MIAMI ? WWE Superstars spend the night before WrestleMania honoring the stories and legends of those that have come before them at the annual WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony. It?s the perfect way to celebrate WWE and it?s rich history. But it?s also a great way for the Superstars and Divas to clear their minds before focusing on the impending battle that is less than 24 hours away. The same mindset holds true for the 20 finalists of the Seventh Annual WrestleMania Reading Challenge World Finals.

For these bookworms, from grades 5 through 12, their main event takes place on Saturday morning at the Dade County Public Library. While a WWE Championship isn?t on the line for these bibliophiles, a chance to win ringsides seats at Sun Life Stadium is. But before they face off in academic competition and devour the written word, the stellar students will have a chance to unwind and meet WWE Superstar Mick Foley and WWE Diva Kelly Kelly for their own exclusive autograph signing. "The kids had no idea we were coming," Kelly Kelly says. "It was such an honor that they were excited to meet us. They were so psyched to sit and talk with and ask us questions. I was so happy that we were able to reward them in that type of way. It?s a special thank you for a good job and for all the hard work they?ve been doing during the school year."

"I always welcome being part of something positive in WWE," Mick Foley says. "I love the fact that WWE promotes reading with an event like this where I get a chance to talk to the kids about their favorites authors and the letters they wrote to their favorite Superstars. The misconception is that wrestling and academics don?t go hand in hand. But I think most Superstars who spend time on the road end up getting an education that?s second to none and we?re able to share that with members of the WWE Universe But it is nice to defy conventional logical and do something positive."

This special autograph signing was all about the kids and rewarding their dedication to reading. "I was going to my public library and I saw a poster with John Cena and the Rock on it. I love to read and I love WrestleMania so the Reading Challenge was a perfect match for me," Nicole Jones, a 7th grader from Alabama says. "I?ve learned determination because I?ve read my book five times and I want to be able to answer every questions so I can win front row seats!" It?s that kind of determination that will make the competition a fierce yet friendly one. "I?m psyched about meeting Kelly Kelly and Mick Foley! He?s got a lot of names and a sock puppet," Isaac Rodriguez, a 6th grader from California says. "But I?m nervous about tomorrow. I don?t even know if I?ll be able to hit the buzzer."

As to what advice this Superstar and Diva had for the kids who are competing tomorrow? Foley says, "I would give the kids the same advice I would give to any WWE Superstar who?s competing at WrestleMania for the first time: enjoy it and take advantage of every second of the experience."? As for Kelly Kelly, "I?d say stay positive and don?t get too overwhelmed and be yourself. Don?t be too nervous about it. Just go into it with an open mind."

The WrestleMania Reading Challenge encourages tweens and teens to read not only during Teen Read Week but each and every day beyond. Who knew that reading a book could lead to a trip to The Shows of Shows on The Grandest Stage of Them All? Now that?s a story with a happy ending.

Pesticides suspected in mass die-off of bees

Scientists have identified a new suspect in the mysterious die-off of bees in recent years ? a class of pesticides that appear to be lethal in indirect ways.

The chemicals, known as neonicotinoids, are designed to target a variety of sucking and chewing insects, including aphids and beetles. Bees are known to ingest the poison when they eat the pollen and nectar of treated plants, though in doses so tiny that it was not seen as a threat.

But two reports published online Thursday by the journal Science indicate that the pesticides are not altogether benign. One study found that bumblebee colonies exposed to amounts of the insecticide similar to what they'd encounter in the wild gained less total weight than colonies that weren't exposed. Another study used miniature radio frequency chips to track honeybees and found that the pesticide impaired their ability to navigate back to the hive after a feeding expedition.

"If it's blundering around and can't return to the hive ... the bee might as well be dead," said Christian Krupke, an entomologist at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., who was not involved in either study.

Beekeepers became alarmed that honeybees were vanishing from their nests across the U.S. in the fall of 2006 ? victims of a perplexing and pervasive malady now known as colony collapse disorder that wiped out as many as 90% of bees, in some cases. Scientists don't know exactly why the ailment strikes, but they believe it results from a combination of habitat degradation, infection by pathogens and parasites and pesticide use. Researchers have also documented sharp declines in bumblebees, which are important crop pollinators but are not domesticated.

The fate of bees is important because they pollinate so many plants, said David Goulson, a biologist at the University of Stirling in Scotland who led the study involving bumblebees. Losing too many of the world's bees could endanger wildflowers, which in turn would affect birds and butterflies, he said.

Bees also help pollinate scores of fruit and vegetable crops, a service that's estimated to be worth $15 billion to the agricultural industry. In California alone, growers rely on honeybees to pollinate 90 crops, including avocado, almond, cherry and plum trees as well as vegetables grown from seeds. In the absence of plentiful bees, California growers could be forced to spend about $250 million renting bees to fertilize their crops.

Neonicotinoid pesticides were developed to eradicate insects without threatening mammals. The chemicals, which are incorporated into the tissues, leaves and flowers of plants, target the central nervous system, leading to paralysis and death. Farmers began using them in the early 1990s.

Past studies have explored effects of neonicotinoids in the lab, finding that they might harm bees' memory, learning and orientation. But the new studies are among the first to examine the pesticides' effects on bees under real-world conditions.

In Scotland, Goulson and his colleagues brought colonies of bumblebees indoors, feeding some a diet of pollen and nectar tainted with neonicotinoids and giving others food without the chemicals. Then they let both groups of bees out in an enclosed field site and let them forage for six weeks.

By the end of the study period, the bees that ate the insecticide produced 85% fewer queens per colony, on average. The queens lay the eggs that produce the members of the colony for the next year.

"If that went on for years, the consequences could be pretty dramatic," Goulson said.

The colonies that were exposed to the pesticide also gained 8% to 12% less weight ? including honey and beeswax ? than the control colonies.

The second study, led by researchers from the French National Institute for Agricultural Research, or INRA, focused on honeybees, which have been victimized by colony collapse disorder throughout the Northern Hemisphere.

First they glued special radio frequency identification tags to the bees' thoraxes. Then they fed the bees sublethal doses of a neonicotinoid and monitored the insects as they attempted to return to the hive.

The research team discovered that the "intoxicated" bees were about twice as likely as unexposed bees to die because they couldn't find their way home. Computer simulations suggested that these no-shows could cause hive populations to crash in a matter of weeks, said study coauthor Mickael Henry, a researcher at INRA in Avignon.

The weakened colonies would be especially vulnerable to environmental stresses such as climate change or disease, he added.

The new findings lend support to the notion that pesticides contribute to colony collapse but leave open the likelihood that habitat destruction and illness play a role too, scientists said.

"There are a whole lot of things that stress the honeybees," said Eric Mussen, a honeybee specialist at UC Davis. "You can't point your finger at one thing and say, 'That is the problem.' "

Mussen cautioned against singling out neonicotinoids when other pesticides could have similar effects on bees. Besides, he said, many insects have built up immunity to neonicotinoids, so farmers are likely to switch to different pesticides anyway.

Jeff Pettis of the Department of Agriculture's bee research lab in Beltsville, Md., who wasn't involved in the studies, praised the bumblebee report in particular for highlighting that honeybees aren't the only ones that may suffer from sublethal doses of pesticides. He predicted that the effects on bee reproduction would raise red flags for regulators at the Environmental Protection Agency.

"There's a general phenomenon of pollinator decline ? bats, bird, butterflies, all kinds of things," he said.

Don't Call Me Marge: Fun Friday Facts #32: Relationships Edition

Ok, so it's been AN ENTIRE WEEK since I blogged and I know you're all sad, distraught, whatevs, because I haven't been around much, but hey guys, spring has spring and I'm crazy busy on account of being so awesome and popular.

I know I've developed a reputation for doing some man-hating over here, even though I don't hate Men in General, just the specific ones on the list I carry around in my head. Anyway, you can all relax, because this isn't one of those posts. Today is Friday, so these are your Fun Friday Facts (about relationships).

You can only have a posthumous wedding if the engagement was agreed upon and the plans finalized before the fiance's death. You have to have set the date, and everything. Officials will require proof of the relationship, including shared lease agreements, shared bank accounts, shared utilities, photos of the wedding dress, engagement rings, etc. Your request for a posthumous marriage must be personally granted by the President of France himself.

Twenty-five percent of these requests are turned down. Nevertheless, a whopping grand total of ten posthumous marriages occur each year in France. The practice apparently began during the first World War, when women began taking advantage of France's marriage-by-proxy laws (which allow someone to stand in for you at your wedding) to marry soldiers who, as it turned out, were already dead.

In the 1950s, civilians won the right to practice posthumous marriage, when a Frenchwoman called Ir?ne Jodart petitioned President de Gaulle to let her marry Andr? Capra, her fiance, who was killed when a dam collapsed in the town of Fr?jus.

If the marriage is granted, it's retroactive to the day before the deceased party became deceased. The widow or widower becomes a legal member of the late partner's family. Any children born of the union are legitimized. The widow or widower is not allowed to inherit any of the dead person's stuff, but may be entitled to any pensions that were due.

2) Speaking of marrying the dead, Carl Tanzler, a German-American born in Dresden in 1877, has gained lasting notoriety for stealing, preserving and, possibly, doing the nasty with the corpse of his beloved, Maria Elena Milagro de Hoyos.

Tanzler emigrated to the United States in 1926. He had been living in Australia, but was detained in an internment camp throughout the first World War. After his release, he sought out his mother in Europe, and lived with her for three years, until she encouraged him to move to Florida to be near his sister. There, he met the love of his life, whose face, he claimed, had been revealed to him in a dream, by his ancestor Anna Constantia von Brockdorff, Countess of Cosel.

Unfortunately, Tanzler's ancestor failed to mention that the girl would be dying of tuberculosis when he met her in April of 1930. Tanzler totally acted like he knew what he was doing and tried to cure the girl through various displays of quackery. He also showered her with gifts and groveled as only a man in the throes of passion can. It is not certain that de Hoyos returned Tanzler's love.

After de Hoyos's death in October 1931, Tanzler received permission from the family to give her one last gift ? an elaborate mausoleum. He visited his dead girlfriend there nightly, serenading her corpse and, so he claimed, communing with her spirit. He later claimed that he decided to steal the body from the tomb and take it home with him because the girl's spirit specifically asked him too.

Tanzler replaced the corpse's decaying skin with wax and plaster-soaked cloth, her eyes with marbles, and her hair with a wig. He filled the torso with rags, dressed it in stockings, gloves and jewels, and doused it in perfumes, preservatives and disinfectants, for some reason. He kept the body in his bed and, according to some sensationalized and not at all substantiated reports, had sex with it.

3) Anna Haining Bates was the child of Scots immigrants, born in Novia Scotia in 1846. Though her parents, and twelve brothers and sisters, were normal in size, Anna herself reached the astounding height of 7'5.5? (2.27 m). Her average weight was about 350 pounds (159 kilos). When she was trapped in a burning building in 1865, it took eighteen firemen to rescue her, by smashing a hole in the wall and lowering her with block and tackle. Anna's husband, Martin van Buren Bates, was 7'11? tall (2.41 m), and weighed 470 pounds (213.64 kilos). Bates worked as a schoolteacher before joining the Civil War on the wrong side. After slinking home in defeat, Bates found his home state of Kentucky still kind of fighting the war a little, and decided to move to Ohio, where he joined the circus.

It was while in the circus that he met Anna, who was just visiting the circus as you do when the guy in charge of giants spotted her and offered her a position on the spot. They married in 1871 and returned to Ohio in 1872, where they bought a farm, built a giant-sized house and settled down to raise a family. Sadly, their first child was stillborn and the second died soon after birth. Anna died of tuberculosis in 1888 at the age of forty-two. Martin moved out of the house, eventually remarried, and lived quietly until his death in 1919, at the age of 80.

The super-sized house they built to suit their super-sized proportions seems to have since been demolished, which is kinda disappointing, because I would have liked to have seen it.

Obama Administration Places $200 Million Bet On Big Data

That's an absolutely unfounded concern.

I worked at a Big Data company. About 90% of my job was improving privacy while maintaining the integrity of medical data. The patient's zip code was reduced to 3 digits. Any references to states were removed and forgotten (because there are some zip codes that cross state lines). Any names were removed, as were any user-entered comments (doctor's notes, etc.) that might possibly contain personal information. Any personal information that is necessary for the system but might be identifiable is salted and hashed twice before it ever leaves the source (hospital, insurance provider, etc).

That in itself isn't good enough for privacy, so we then used some proprietary methods (that was kinda outside my job, so I don't know much about them) to intentionally screw up the data we provided to our users. A user could find out, for example, that between one and fifty people in the vicinity of Denver had a particular medical condition on a particular date, and received a particular drug. Narrow down results more than that, and my company's system simply wouldn't fulfill the request.

This isn't really the exception to how many Big Data companies treat their data. Believe it or not, Big Data providers take privacy seriously, and are willing to sacrifice perfect accuracy to run an ethical operation. Anyone interested in Big Data is running on statistics anyway, so statistically-insignificant methods are easy to preserve privacy.

Update for March - income tax refund: Dividing the Dime Personal ...

March 29th, 2012 at 02:54 pm

I finished my tax return and expect about $1500 refund. I changed my withholding in an effort to get less of a refund next year. I haven't seen the difference yet, so I'll plan for it when I have the actual number for my new take home pay.

I would like to go on record and say this about the instructions for the Form 1040: "Seriously????" I normally do our taxes, but for some reason, I had trouble understanding the language this year. I mean, SERIOUSLY???? Maybe I'm just getting older and more cranky.

I have an idea of how to divide up the refund of $1500 for savings. Much of it (about $800) will sit in my Christmas shopping account. The rest I keep rearranging on paper - some to my Roth IRA, some to my Freedom account, some to my wealth account/car account, some to our house repair account. So many choices!! I'll figure something out. I'm determined to save the bulk of it, give away a little (to church and a homeless shelter) and spend a small amount for things around the house.

Next year, I probably won't know how to act if I don't get a refund. (Or worse, if I owe!) Like several folks I know, I think I'm addicted to getting a decent tax refund. It's a nice chunk of cash to decide what to do with. We'll see how disciplined I am about saving during the rest of this year to make good on getting a bigger paycheck rather than a bigger refund.

Anyhoo, happy saving everyone!!

I recently discovered Savored, a new ?food and drink? service that allows you to save as much as 30% on your entire bill while discovering high-end restaurants, food and drinks in New York City! The website is user friendly and offers great daily deals in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Washington, DC.

My experiences with Savored.com

I recently made a reservation for two on savored.com. I wanted to try something new and picked Trattoria Cinque, an Italian restaurant run by a renowned Chef Mirco Grassini, in TriBeCa. I booked a table online and paid a $10 flat fee for my reservation. Once I arrived at the restaurant I just gave my name and the hostess seated us. The table we were given was great and the food amazing! The place was cozy and trendy with beautiful brick arches separating the dinning areas. We started with a delicious beef Carpaccio and tried the recommended Gorgonzola, pear, and truffle oil pizza and finished with a pasta vongole. The service was good and no word was ever mentioned about the website. At the end of the dinner, the entire bill was automatically discounted by 30% and we saved a little more than $15 after deducing the $10 reservation fee.

Some 'Idol' singers get 'spiritual financial aid'

By Sean Daly, TODAY.com contributor

FOX

Contestant Jeremy Rosado wearing the white bracelet given to him by "Idol Pastor" Leesa Bellesi.

Fashion advice from?Tommy Hilfiger. Musical guidance from both record-label honcho Jimmy Iovine and a major recording artist each week. A mansion to live in. "American Idol" provides all this for its contestants.

But as it turns out, another perk of being on the show is "spiritual financial aid" for the hopefuls and their families, though not from the show itself. And just for those more spiritually inclined singers -- some of whom are approached,?and some ?who seek it out.

Proud Christian Colton Dixon is the latest ?Idol? singer to hook up with a Southern California ministry that provides that extra bit of help.

?Colton is the Tim Tebow of ?American Idol,? ? said Leesa Bellesi, who founded the Kingdom Assignment ministry in Orange County?with her husband, preacher Denny Bellesi.? ?I have had some really unique opportunities to pray over (Colton) and give input where I can.?

Fox did not reply to a request for comment.

Kingdom Assignmentstarted at Coast Hills Community Church in Aliso Viejo and has become known among the show?s inner circle simply as the ?American Idol Ministry.?

The Bellesis have been known to literally pass the hat throughout their congregation, collecting donations that are used to help ?Idol? families fund their trips to Los Angeles while their loved ones compete. Previous "Idol" contestants -- including Katherine McPhee, Chris Sligh and Charity Vance --?have all attended services and supported the Bellesis' cause by performing at church-sanctioned events.

So just how did the Bellesis get connected with the show? Leesa Bellesi snuck backstage during season five and presented a silver bracelet engraved with ?Jeremiah 29:11? to eventual runner-up Katherine, who had once come to hear her husband?s sermon.

The contestant wasn't the only one to receive a bracelet from Bellesi. This season, she passed out white rubber bracelets with the message "God has good plans 4 me" to many of the Top 24 hopefuls, including Shannon Magrane and Heejun Han.

?The night that Jeremy Rosado (received the wild card) and became very emotional, the camera zoomed in on him and you could see he was wearing one,? Leesa told us.

As for Colton, he?first met the pair in 2010.?After his early elimination last season (he was cut just shy of the Top 24), Colton performed for their congregation at the Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, Calif.

?I love Leesa,? Colton told TODAY.com. ?She is known as ?The Idol Pastor.?? She is so caring and so giving. She just wants to love on the contestants and their families.?And provide a home for them if they need it.?

While current contestants are generally sequestered from the public during the competition, ?I connect with him on Twitter and stuff like that,? Leesa said.

Meanwhile, Colton?s parents have been part-time guests of the Bellesis?, who have also opened their Orange County home to the families of dozens of ?Idol? hopefuls, including Jason Castro and Syesha Mercado, since season five.

Leesa Bellesi told TODAY.com that despite warnings from producers that?Colton's faith talk?could alienate some potential voters, she ?applauds? the singer for publicly representing his beliefs.

?Them telling him that was brilliant -- because it is true,? she said. ?If you get into sharing your politics or your faith, there are people who are going to have feelings against that. But Colton is not going to deny what he believes in.?Even with his branding, on his Facebook page, they kept it consistent:?Love God, Love Music, Love People.?

(AP) ? Syrian forces have captured a northern town from rebels after four days of fighting in which more than 40 people were killed and homes were burned down, activists said Wednesday.

It was just the latest in a string of opposition strongholds to fall to ruthless assaults by the better-equipped Syrian military.

Activists also reported clashes between Syrian army units and rebels in the country's center and east.

The fresh violence comes one day after President Bashar Assad said he has accepted a six-point U.N. plan to resolve the country's year-long crisis, including a cease-fire.

The Local Coordination Committees network said there were many unidentified corpses and wounded people in the streets of Saraqeb, the northern opposition town that the military seized after a four-day offensive that began Sunday.

As in other towns and cities recaptured recently by the army, Syrian troops left behind a trail of death and destruction.

The LCC and another activist group, the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said hundreds of homes and shops in Saraqeb were pillaged and burned, and most of the town's residents fled along with the rebels.

Activist Fadi al-Yassin in the northern province of Idlib said the army was now in full control of Saraqeb. He said army defectors known as the Free Syrian Army resisted on the first day but then pulled out, fearing that they would bring more destruction on the town.

"They fled because there was no way they were going to be able to face the regime's huge military force," he said by satellite phone.

Saraqeb is on the main highway from the northern city of Aleppo and had an active FSA presence. Rebel fighters used it as a base to target army convoys nearby.

Detailed information from the town was limited because the military was surrounding it.

"The situation is very hard on the ground, and it's difficult for us to get there to find out exactly what is going on because the army is in complete control of the city," al-Yassin said.

Video from Saraqeb posted on the Internet appeared to back activists' claims of mass destruction and pillaging.

One video showed what appeared to be a destroyed home. Another showed burned out apartments, several burned cars and a row of shops with their shutters blown off. The slogan "Down with Bashar" was sprayed on one of the shutters. "Down with Iran's dog," read another. Iran is one of Syria's last close allies.

Al-Yassin said that of the roughly 50 people killed since Sunday, most were civilians. Some were rebel fighters.

Another group, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, also reported more than 50 killed in the town in recent days.

Elsewhere, three Syrian soldiers were killed in clashes with rebels in the central province of Homs Wednesday. The Observatory said the fighting broke out when government forces tried to enter the town of Rastan, which is in the hands of army defectors. The activist group also reported clashes in the Deir el-Zour province along the Iraqi border and said government troops fired mortars at the city of Homs.

The fresh violence coincides with a new wave of international diplomacy seeking to end the conflict that the U.N. says has left more than 9,000 people dead.

Syria said Tuesday that Assad accepted a peace plan put forward by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan. The plan calls for Damascus to immediately stop troop movements and use of heavy weapons in populated areas and to commit to a daily two-hour halt in fighting to allow humanitarian access and medical evacuations.

It also calls for a full cease-fire to be supervised by the U.N. so that all parties can discuss a political solution.

Members of the fractured opposition struggling to end Assad's rule accused him of using the plan to stall for time as his troops make a renewed push to finish off bastions of dissent.

The U.S. and Britain, both of which have called on the Syrian president to step down, said Assad must back his words with action.

The 22-member Arab League was discussing a new resolution on the Syria conflict at a summit in Baghdad. The body's foreign ministers were expected to ask their heads of state to urge the Syrian regime to halt its crackdown on civilians and allow humanitarian groups into the country. Supplier Chatter Suggests New HD Models Of Kindle Fire Forthcoming

kinfiEarly in 2011, upstream suppliers of displays and components let a few of Amazon's secrets into the open, and these early, incomplete indications were actually on whole quite correct. Now we're seeing more of the same kind of thing predicting the coming year's announcements from Amazon, and the predictions seem just as reasonable. The news is what you might expect: a diversification of the Kindle Fire lineup, with a focus on display quality — and presumably thrift, considering the series' low price.

Downtown Development Authority ballot questions only for those ...

The town of Windsor sent out about 170 ballots to those in the Windsor Downtown Development Authority boundaries with two ballot questions for the April 3 municipal election.

Ballot question 3A (approval of property tax levy) and 3B (approval of debt to finance DDA projects) were sent to those in the DDA boundaries, and not to any other Windsor residents.

?If you?re a resident, a business owner or a property owner within the DDA boundaries, you are eligible to vote,?said Elizabeth Fields, associate planner for the town of Windsor and the town liaison for the DDA.

Fields said the DDA boundaries are from 2nd to 7th streets, the alley south of Main Street up to the railroad tracks.

According to a Q&A sheet from the town of Windsor, ballot question 3A allows an annual levy of up to 5 mills of property tax on properties within the DDA, and the money is typically used for operations of DDA. The DDA recommendation for 2013 is for a levy of one mill, which would generate $4,177 per year within the DDA. Five mills would generate $20,886 per year.

The town of Windsor has committed to giving the DDA an annual sum for five years beginning in 2012 equal to the sales tax collected in the DDA boundaries as of 2010, and an annual sum equal to the new sales tax generated within the DDA above the 2010 amount.

The purpose of the ballot question 3B, according to the town?s Q&A sheet, is to be able to finance future DDA projects included in its plan of development, such as private and public offices, retail/commercial, housing, light manufacturing and transportation-related projects including public utilities, streets and alleyways, sidewalks and pathways, public parking, pedestrian and vehicular circulation system, beautification programs, convention/exhibition facility in conjunction with private development of a downtown hotel and banquet hall.

?Those are projects that were an idea of what they could use that money for. They could use it for other things as well,? Fields said.

DDA voters are being asked if the town of Windsor?s debt should be increased $25 million with a repayment cost of $54.5 million for the purpose of financing the costs of downtown development. By state law, 100 percent of property tax increment with the DDA is collected for a 30-year period to be used to pay for DDA programs and projects. The $25 million in financing capacity allows the DDA to develop future projects and programs, and the $25 million debt ceiling is the maximum amount of debt that can be incurred to finance DDA programs and projects for that period of time without additional approval from voters.

?They have to have a budget approved every year, and the town board also approves their budget every year so they can?t just go out and do whatever they want with this money,? Fields said. ?There are checks and balances every year to make sure what they?re spending the money on is appropriate projects for downtown and will improve downtown. We have to set that limit really high. If we set it as $2 million and we do a big project and we reach that in a couple of years, they?d have to go back and do another election to raise that. In their lifetime, they could spend $10 million on projects. They don?t have to reach that $25 million. It?s that cap that we?re estimating.?

It does not mean that the town?s debt will automatically be increased by $25 million, and since it?s a debt ceiling of $25 million, it may never be reached depending on what DDA projects are approved, the cost of the projects and how much revenue and tax increment is available to pay off the debt.

Windsor residents outside the DDA will not feel a property tax increase, Fields said. As far an impact of property taxes to Windsor residents, there is no impact because the town and the DDA do not levy a property tax to pay the debt.

?Unless you?re in the DDA boundaries, you will not see any change to your taxes, your property. Anything that you?re paying right now will not change at all based on these two elections,? Fields said.

March Marks Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month | My Sunday News

It is critical that we become Sun City-informed citizenry about the cancer that affects the colon and rectum because early detection through regular screenings can beat this cancer. Indeed it is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. (only behind lung cancer). Globally, cancer of the colon and rectum is the third-leading cause of cancer in males and the fourth leading cause of cancer in females. The frequency of colorectal cancer varies around the world. It is common in the Western World and is rare in Asia and Africa. In countries where people have adopted western diets, the incidence of this cancer is increasing.

Cancer is a group of more than 100 different diseases. They affect the body?s basic unit, the cell. Cancer occurs when cells become abnormal and divide without order or control. Normally, cells divide to produce more cells only when the body needs them. If cells keep dividing when new cells are not needed, a mass of tissue forms. This mass of extra tissue, called a growth or tumor, can be benign or malignant.

When cancer spreads to another part of the body, the new tumor has the same kind of abnormal cells and the same name as the primary tumor. For example, if colon cancer has spread from the colon area to the liver, the cancer cells there are referred to also as colon cancer cells. Colon cancer is a metastatic disease (spread to other organs/tissues) .

What exactly is cancer of the colon and the rectum (colorectal, or colon cancer)? The colon is the part of the digestive system where the waste material is stored. The rectum is the end of the colon adjacent to the anus. Together they form a long, muscular tube called the large intestine, or large bowel.

Tumors in this area of the body are growths arising from the inner wall of the large intestine. Benign tumors of the large intestine are known as polyps. Malignant tumors here are known as cancers. The benign polyps do not invade nearby tissue or spread to other parts of the body. They can easily be removed during the colonoscopy procedure (the test that enables the doctor to see up into the large intestine walls).

If these polyps are not removed from the large bowel, however, they can become malignant over time. Most cancers found in this area are believed to have developed from polyps. Once metastasis has occurred in colorectal cancer, a complete cure of the cancer is unlikely.

Physicians recommend colonoscopies among adults to begin at the age of 50. A healthy colonoscopy result may lead to a 5 to 10-year interval between screenings. It is never too late to begin by having your first colonoscopy. If you haven?t begun testing for colon/rectal abnormalities, make a pledge to yourself to have that first screening at once. Your life may depend on it. Also please be aware of the following signs and symptoms of colon cancer:

1. A change in your bowel habits or a change in the consistency of your stool

2. Rectal bleeding or blood in your stool

3. Persistent abdominal discomfort, such as cramps, gas, or pain

4. A feeling that your bowel doesn?t empty completely

5. Weakness or fatigue

6. Unexplained weight loss

Many people with colon cancer experience no symptoms in the early stages of the disease. When symptoms appear, they?ll vary, depending on the cancer?s size and location in the large intestine.

Who is at risk for colorectal cancer?

1. Men and women over the age of 50

2. Adults who use tobacco, are obese, or are sedentary

3. Those with a family history of colorectal cancer, polyps, or other types of bowel disease

4. Persons with a high fat intake, where fat metabolism leads to formation of carcinogens (cancer-causing chemicals)

How can Sun Citians reduce their chances of becoming victims of colorectal cancer?

1. Don?t smoke

2. Don?t drink alcohol excessively

3. Be physically active and exercise regularly

4. Maintain a healthy weight

5. Eat a high-fiber diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and whole grains.

6. Consume calcium-rich foods such as low-fat or skim milk and yogurt.

7. Limit red meat consumption and avoid processed meats.

8. If you haven?t had one yet, schedule yourself for a colonoscopy test or a follow-up test based on your physician?s recommendation.

Google Voice updated, brings folders and dialer integration for ICS

Google Voice

If you're a Google Voice user there's quite the update waiting for you in the Google Play store this afternoon. The newest version (0.4.2.54) features tight integration with the Ice Cream Sandwich dialer, a new voicemail option, and the inclusion of labels (think folders) for your inbox. Here's the not-so-fun part -- unless you have a phone with Ice Cream Sandwich, you won't get to see most of it.

All phones will get the inbox labels, which is one thing many folks, myself included, have been waiting for. If you use your Google Voice inbox as a catch-all storage and never delete anything you can now attempt to keep things organized and access it all from your phone. This is the best change for me, but the others are nice as well.

Voicemails are now able to be played through the native Ice Cream Sandwich dialer, just like carrier voicemail. You can adjust the speed to play them faster or slower (handy when skipping to the good part). You enable this in the Google Voice settings, and it's a great way to manage two numbers if that's how you roll. That is how I roll, and it's really handy. Too bad it's ICS only. Hit the break for a couple screenshots of all this, and the download link if you need it.
