I spent Sunday morning with the American Diabetes Association at their 2nd Annual Cherry Blossom Bike Ride & Cycle Expo in Georgetown kicking off the National Capital Area cycling season.
4 local celebrities came out to lead 10 mile rides along the Capital Crescent Trail throughout the day. John Anderson,?a member of cycling team Team Type 2, kicked off the first ride with more experienced riders. John was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and sets a solid example in the community managing the disease?through?health and fitness. ?Kory Lichtensteiger, Washington Redskin?s offensive guard, graciously stepped up to ride in support of his brother, Kirk, who has Type 1 diabetes and also joined the ride. Biggest Loser contestant from season 6, Stacy Capers, who has lost over 90 lbs and regularly incorporates cycling into her fitness program, led the 3rd ride and Anthony Rico, a Wounded Warrior who could not walk for 7 months and who used cycling to regain his health, led the final ride.? Event organizer Lindsey Woodward said ?We are incredibly thankful to have such inspirational ride leaders as a part of this event and hope participants see that anyone can ride and are inspired to continue to stay active to help prevent and manage diabetes.?
Back at the Waterfront, local vendors taught cycling related seminars at the Cycle Expo portion of the event. I learned ?Emergency Bike Maintenance? from CycleLife USA and ?Cross-Training Exercises for Cyclist? from Ambitious Athletics. Seminars went until 2pm with 6 great topics that have me feeling ready to accomplish my new goal?
I was inspired to register for the Tour de Cure on June 3rd in Reston, VA. I?ll be completing, well, attempting to complete my first century ride, which is 100 miles of biking. Maybe I can convenience the fojol bros. food truck, and you, to ride along with me.
